š:Travis Scott, TikTok, Twitter Threads
š What's up yall, here's a recap of all the best marketing stuff I read this week, and why you should care about it. My goal is to help busy marketers and founders stay in the loop with what's new in marketing.
- Travis Scott Doesnāt Like āBrandingā or āMarketing,ā but Heās So Damn Good at Both - I mean, he is DAMN good. Every time he drops merch itās a frenzy and sells out. He held a crazy concert inside Fortnite. McDonaldās even did a collab for a signature beverage. Andā¦heās Adweekās Creative Visionary of the Year. Another bullet point for the argument that hip-hop will always be the biggest influence on pop culture in America (thatās not a hot take, itās just a fact) š¤
- Signal had a dope advertising campaign this week - the most clever Iāve seen in a while - Signal is a privacy focused messaging app, and they ran a bunch of FB ads that showed what kind of targeting data they could use to advertise. Brilliant. One of the best campaigns I've seen in a minute š
- The purchase power of TikTok: about half of all users have bought something that theyāve seen from a brand ā Thatās kind of crazy when you consider TikTok is on pace to hit 1B users by the end of this year š¤Æ
- Supergoop! Celebrating āUnprecedentedā Pandemic Success with First Major Brand Campaign - I have this theory, and you might call it a hill that Iām willing to die on. But every company is now a media company. Or at least they should be thinking like one. Supergoop! is a sunscreen company that now has a morning show in which they convince people to start their day with a little SPF. So they are now a media company that happens to sell sunscreen. Much like Peloton is a media company that happens to sell bikes. You get the idea š¬
- Twitter threads are a really under rated way to grow a following right now. hereās how to maximize them with Morning Brewās Alex Garcia š§µ
- Speaking of Twitter threads. I made one about Webflow this week and how it offers speed to marketers. It escalated quickly when Webflow RTād it. Then I recorded a quick video tutorial on what the thread was about and shared it to folks. Next, Webflow posted my Tweet to their IG, and now I have an interview set with the product team to talk more about my ideas. So, two things: 1) Twitter is under rated, and 2) share your knowledge openly, you never know what can happen if you do. š¤
- A bunch of Instagram updates this week! First, Instagram adds captions to stories (with reels coming soon) - the battle for features between IG and TikTok continues to heat up as IG adds yet another existing IG feature: automatic captions. Also, Instagram announced new features to help creators make money + they might be removing like counts in an effort to reduce the social pressure and mental stress those like counts can bring on. All I get from this is the team at Instagram is slamming espresso day and night. š¤³
- How to get Google Autosuggest directly in Google Sheets - this blew my mind. If you need new keyword ideas for your SEO work, this is about as fast and automatic as it gets. Almost like a cheat code š®
- Spencer Stuart conducted a CMO Tenure Study. The TL;DR is some progress for women, less for racial diversity AND tenure is at the owest point since 2009. The C-suite is rough, and even more-so for CMOs where the median tenure is 25 months - yikes. Almost half of the CMOs in the study were women, which is progress. But only 12% were racially or ethnically diverse. Yikes š¤®
- Lauren Schuman speaks on how a simple messaging change increased paid conversions by 33% (worth $millions) at Mailchimp. Positivity in your messaging, people! š
- Something fun to look at: The folks at Really Good Emails put together a showcase of well-designed dark mode friendly emails. Check it out if email design is your thing. š¬
Thatās all for this week yāall. As always, let me know if you found this helpful and what you think
